“I want to start my own (fill in the blank) _____________ “but everybody’s doing it.” I would love to share ___________________ “but everybody’s doing it.” Sound familiar? If so, I need you to get your mind right. Because here’s the thing, my friend, your response, “but everybody is doing it,” is stopping you from creating the life you want.
Seriously, it’s a poor excuse for not turning your business ideas into reality and it’s keeping you stuck. And to be brutally honest, your response is rooted in fear. It’s a typical excuse for people who worry too much about what other people think.
I gotta admit, I used to be that girl—stuck in the “but everybody’s doing it” phase. But in 2009, I took a trip to Cairo, Egypt–and it was my first lesson in innovation and business.
Now for those of you who don’t know, Egypt is considered the “Mother of the World. With colossal structures and pyramids built (mostly intact) over 4,000 years ago, this is a destination filled with magic and mystery. By the way, if you haven’t done so already, you should add it to your bucket list.
Anywho, after spending a few days exploring the pyramids, observing Egyptian paintings that decorated the walls of the tombs, and gazing in awe at King Tut’s jewelry and accessories including folding beds, bangles, shaving tools, backpacks, rings, and necklaces, I immediately thought to myself, there’s nothing new under the sun. And. I. mean. nothing.
The Egyptians used most of the same essentials that we rely on today.
My point is everyone takes an idea from someone or something and adds their spin, twist or flavor to it. Speaking of flavor—let’s talk about ice cream. What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? Who makes your favorite brand of ice cream? I’m an old fashioned kind of girl—so I’ll take Dairy Queen’s plain ol’ vanilla ice cream in a waffle cone—please and thank you. Now, although Häagen-Dazs and Baskin Robins have been around for years, it didn’t stop Turkey Hill or Breyers from manufacturing their own brand of ice cream. In fact, did it stop Dairy Queen or Cold Stone from setting up shop with the same ol’ vanilla flavored ice cream? Heck, no. Even McDonald’s is in the ice cream game. Again, everyone takes a product, service or idea and adds their unique flavor to it.
So whether you’re an aspiring entrepreneur or a person looking to change careers, get out of your own way.
The solution to the “but everyone’s doing it” syndrome is your unique story or point of view. Tell us what’s missing from a common topic, product or service. In fact, tell us what frustrates you the most about the industry–and build a product or service around that frustration. Tell us how to do things better and make our lives easier. Create a product or service around your biggest lesson learned–and provide real solutions for people you want to buy into your brand. These are things that can make your personal brand stand out.
At the end of the day, we’re all artist—fully capable of creating our own reality.

Oh and friendly reminder, there are over 7 billion people on earth. You can’t reach everyone nor should you try. Define your own rules for success. Focus on a specific group, find your authentic voice, work your butt off and never give up on yourself–because there’s enough success to go around for all of us.
