Soooo umm, are we really surprised that Beyonce did a drive by on a Saturday afternoon with her latest single “Formation?” I certainly wasn’t shocked, but I was slightly caught off guard by her unapologetic commentary on everything from police brutality and ongoing racial tension in America to sex and Internet trolls who have nothing else better to do than talk sh*t about Blu Ivy’s hair, Jay Z’s lips…and oh the infamous’Illuminati.’
In short Yoncé has reached a whole new level of badassery–and I’m here for every minute of it.
Now let’s talk about Formation. Beyond girl power affirmations and dope dance moves, there’s some insane badassery happening in this video. Here are a few rules that Yoncé broke fabulously.
Infraction 1: Refusing to apologize for her blackness
I love the fact that Beyoncé has evolved into Yoncé: a multi-talented woman who’s unapologetic about owning her truth. She’s a classy lady with a little ratchet in her, obsessed with hot sauce and Red Lobster cheddar biscuits.
“Earned all this money but they never take the country out me;”
“I like my negro nose with Jackson 5 nostrils”
Infraction 2: A call to action from one black woman to another: Get in Formation!
There’s no room for bull sh*t when you’re building an empire. The success of one woman is inspiration for another. Yonce is a proud black woman who knows she can slay in her own lane–and still make room for other women;
Infraction 3: Reminding the world that Black Lives Matter
When you’re worth a gazillion bucks I supposed you could hide behind your money, mansion and private jets. And I guess you could forget about issues happening in urban areas across the country. But she’s a woman who understands that when you have over 60 million followers around the world, (way more followers than CNN and BBC combined via Twitter) you have a duty to use your platform to spotlight social injustice.
Infraction 4: Not caring about what people think.
Trolls, haters, etc. get your life. I’ve proven myself. I know I’m the shi*t…Now Carry on. Yonce let the people know she gives no dams about what they think. Who needs approval?
“Y’all haters corny with that illuminate mess. Paparazzi, catch my fly, and my cocky fresh.”
Yonce knows her power: “I slay, I slay, I slay, all day. “I just might be a black Bill Gates in the making.”
And the most Instagrammable lines:
“I grind ’til I own it”
“Always stay gracious, best revenge is your paper.”
