{New Podcast} How to Position and Market Yourself as a Speaker

Guess who was selected as a speaker for the South by Southwest Festival and Conference (SXSW )  happening in March 2018? As you can imagine, I am over the moon.

For those of you who don’t know the SXSW brings together the brightest and innovative minds from around the world in film, fashion, culinary, music, tv, entertainment, culture and technology and more. 

It features speakers from all walks of life. In the past, everyone from  Snoop Dogg, Lady Gaga, and Bruce Springsteen to the legendary Quincy Jones, Chelsea Clinton, and Ava DuVernay, have graced the SXSW stage.  And it’s known for attracting up to 80,000 people for the conference portion and 400,000 for the festival. 

Again, excited is an overstatement. 


Now, if you follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter (and if you’re not following me—get your mind right here,here and here ), you’ve probably noticed that I’ve done quite a few speaking gigs including workshops and panels throughout the US and Africa.


You’d probably be surprised. But for me, landing speaking engagements really has nothing to do with a speaking kit, publicist or toastmaster club (a public speaking class).  In fact, in 2013 I landed my first international speaking gig and I didn’t have any of the typical marketing materials people say that you should have.
I simply met a woman entrepreneur for dinner (we initially met on Twitter), shared my passion for empowering young women and my perspectives on storytelling as a tool to change a negative narrative and stand out from the crowd—5 days later I got an invite to speak at the WIE Conference in Lagos, Nigeria. Six months later I was on a flight to share my expertise in front of a crowd of about 200 people.
Since then, I’ve landed several more speakings throughout the US and Africa. 

But I wanted to backtrack and let you know how I landed this opportunity. Because so often you see these things promoted on social media–and it leaves many people wondering–How in the heck did she do it? 

Well say no more. I dedicated an entire podcast to sharing how I’ve landed paid and exposure related speaking gigs and workshops throughout the United States and Africa.
