The death of style and musical icon, Prince Rogers Nelson, left millions of people around the world in complete shock. But immediately after I learned of his death, I thought about his legacy.
Prince, a one man band and musical genius, was mysterious, yet powerful.
Before the word “brand” became wildly (
Music Executive LA Reid said it best “Prince had the masculinity of Teddy Pendergrass, but he could take your girl, wearing high heel shoes.” And he did it all while remaining true to his art and keeping his personal life private. To top it all off, he was a philanthropist–doing work that matters in communities across the country without the need to publicize it.
When you live your life unapologetically, you go against the grain and you’re certainly not afraid to stand alone. You could care less about going to war over your financial and creative freedom with a multi-million dollar record company, like Warner Bros., because it’s life on your terms, or not at all.
During a 1996 interview with Rolling Stone, Prince summed up #lifegoals perfectly “People think I’m a crazy fool for writing ‘slave’ on my face, but if I can’t do what I want to do, what am I? When you stop a man from dreaming, he becomes a slave. That’s where I was. I don’t own Prince’s music. If you don’t own your masters, your master owns you.” While boycotting his label over freedom, Prince even changed his name to “The Artist Formerly Known and Prince, wrote the word “slave” across his face during performances–not giving a damn about his $100 million record deal!
So, I have to give Prince the 2016 Lifetime Rule Breaker Award for not only living his life unapologetically but showing others what it means to carve your own path to success–especially during a time when many people are curating “perfect lives” for the “gram.”
Check out 7 Prince quotes inspiring you to live by your own rules.
“All people care about nowadays is getting paid, so they try to do just what the audience wants them to do. I’d rather give people what they need rather than just what they want.”
“Everyone has their own experience. That’s why we are here, to go through our experience, to learn, to go down those paths and eventually you may have gone down so many paths and learned so much that you don’t have to come back again.”
“There are no accidents. And if there are, it’s up to us to look at them as something else. And that bravery is what creates new flowers.”
“Dearly beloved we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life.”
“Time is a mind construct. It’s not real. A strong spirit transcends rules.”
“Despite who you are no one can dictate who you are to other people.”
And my personal favorite: “I can’t be played. A person that tries to play me Plays themselves.” What’s yours?
Beyond remembering Prince for his musical ingenuity and flair for fashion, his death should leave us all asking the question: Are you creating a legacy that will outlive you?
